John Ruiz has already started his excuses for his attempt to try and reclaim the WBA Heavyweight title this Saturday at the MEN Arena in Manchester.
Ruiz, the boxer that no nation wants to claim as their own, believes that he had been robbed twice when fighting for the WBA title in Berlin against Nicolai Valuev. Where some might say that once is a possibility, when claiming that both fights were fixed or biased can look like sour grapes.
“There is nothing worse than when someone wins the fight and he doesn’t get the decision.” Said Ruiz,
“It is a black eye for boxing and the Haye fight is so big we cannot have any wrong-doing.”
What is confusing is that David Haye beat Valuev on points, and in Germany. So what could be Ruiz’s explanation of that? Well obviously, the fans cheering influenced the officials decision.
“The English fans swayed the judges that night.” Ranted Ruiz “But it happens in boxing and all I ask is a fair crack of the whip.
“The crowd can motivate a judge to give a fighter a round when he lost. And the English fans were incredible in Germany.
“But fighting Haye instead of Valuev is a break for me. I would have hated to fight Valuev in Germany for a third time – and anyway, I am 6-0 in England!”
The Latino former champ can be forgiven for thinking that three times could be a charm, as Saturday could see him becoming the WBA Champion for the third time. However it does seem that Ruiz has shot himself in the foot leading up to the fight. Know your enemy! First rule of combat, and while Adam Booth, Haye’s trainer, has been analysing every piece of footage of Ruiz he can find, the former champ has only seen one of Hayes fights.
“All I have seen of Haye is the last fight with Valuev. He is definitely a mover. I expect him to come out and let his shots go but my job is to minimise his movements.
“I am going to make him fight my fight and stop what he usually does. If I can cut off the ring he’ll fight my kind of fight.”
The Valuev fight did not show the real David Haye that night. With the perfect battle plan to take out the Russian Goliath, Haye fought like bird swooping in to attack and fly away until he was ready to go in for the kill. If Ruiz is expecting that version of David Haye on Saturday then it could be a very short night for the Latino American.
It will be disapointing to see Ruiz make excuses should he lose by decision on Saturday. As an act of charity, David Haye should deliver a trademark Hayemaker and put Ruiz on the canvas. At least then he can be sure that it was not a case of ‘three times unlucky’.
